Keira Walsh: Chelsea sign England midfielder from Barcelona to assist Champions League bid

Chelsea have signed England midfielder Keira Walsh from Barcelona.

Negotiations were concluded on Thursday morning - WSL Deadline Day - and a fee of around £400,000 agreed.

Walsh's Barcelona contract ends in June and she was keen on a return to the WSL as preparations step up for this summer's Euros with England.

The 27-year-old became the most expensive transfer in the history of the women's game when joining Barcelona from Manchester City in 2022.

Chelsea broke the new record - held by Bay FC forward Rachael Kundanaji - to sign USA defender Naomi Girma from San Diego Wave earlier this month.

Walsh has 80 caps for the Lionesses and was a key part of the team which won the Euros in 2022 and reached the World Cup final in 2023.

She has won back-to-back league titles and Champions Leagues with Barcelona after helping Man City to the WSL title in 2016.

Sky Sports' Laura Hunter:

Chelsea have done it again. Another high-profile signing with immeasurable talent walks through the doors of Stamford Bridge. A move that comes days after the club broke the world record with a £900k capture of Naomi Girma.

Walsh is a huge coup, not least because Arsenal were the frontrunners for her signature in the summer, but have since been punished for their hesitation. Besides, the Gunners are way behind what Chelsea can currently offer a player as ambitious as Walsh.

Chelsea have been decisive and put their money where their mouth is. Make no mistake, this is Sonia Bompastor's side going full throttle for Champions League honours. The WSL title is as good as wrapped up barring any major meltdowns - it's European glory that Walsh and Girma have been tasked with delivering.

It's the reason Lucy Bronze was targeted in the summer, and before that, it was the chief motivation behind Bompastor's appointment as head coach. They are now better equipped than ever to take that next step.

Go bold or go home. Could this finally be Chelsea's year?
