Captain commands Catterick contest

A round-up of the news from Catterick, where Silvestre De Sousa recorded a treble and Captain Dunne scored for Tim Easterby.

Veteran sprinter Captain Dunne continued his resurgent season with with a tremendous front-running display in the feature event at Catterick.

It is over four years since Tim Easterby's admirable gelding claimed his career highlight victory in the Epsom 'Dash' and while he may not be quite the same force in the twilight of his career, he has clearly lost none of his enthusiasm.

The 10-year-old lined up for the Skybet Supporting The Yorkshire Racing Summer Festival Handicap having already won twice under Rachel Richardson at Thirsk this term and the talented apprentice got her fractions right in front once again.

A blistering start gave the 2-1 favourite a clear advantage and while the challengers were queuing up in the straight, Captain Dunne was not for catching, keeping up the gallop to score by a length and a half from Irish Girls Spirit.

Richardson said: "He's an absolute star. He's a 10-year-old now and he still goes like a three-year-old.

"He loves his work at home and loved being out in front there.

"He's got so much speed. He stands in the gate and listens to the starter and as soon as he shouts, he's out!

"He keeps himself fit and credit to Tim for training him."

Title-chasing jockey Silvestre de Sousa enjoyed a treble on the afternoon, with Highly Sprung initiating the hat-trick in the opening British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden Stakes.

The Mark Johnston-trained 13-8 chance showed a smart turn of foot to see off hot favourite Valko by three and a half lengths.

The trainer's wife, Deirdre Johnston, said: "He really deserved that. First time we brought him here it was too sharp, but he's done nothing wrong since.

"I think the conditions today - an easy six furlongs on fast ground - suited him ideally and he's won really well."

De Sousa was later successful aboard Mick Channon's 2-5 favourite Cuppatee in the seller and Quickaswecan (100-30 favourite) from Ivan Furtado's yard in the Anne's 60th Birthday Supporting New Beginnings Handicap.

Johnston was also on the mark once more as Montsarrat landed the odds in the 5th Regiment Royal Artillery Heimdall Nursery.

A rare ride at Catterick for William Buick, the juvenile was a prohibitively priced 1-6 favourite after main rival Hibou got loose and was withdrawn before the start and he made no mistake, getting the better of his only rival Cotton Camera by a length and a half.

Kyrenia Castle was a 7-2 winner of the August 14th Is Ladies' Evening Claiming Stakes for father-son combination Dandy and Adrian Nicholls, comfortably beating odds-on favourite Johnny B Goode.

"It's easy when there's only four runners and it looked a straight shoot-out between me and Tony (Hamilton, on Johnny B Goode)," the winning jockey told Racing UK.

"My lad jumped well and Tony's horse didn't look the most genuine and straightforward. My lad only had to keep going and he did that."

There was a thrilling four-way finish to the concluding catterickbridge.co.uk Apprentice Training Series Handicap and it was the grey Pertuis (5-1) to got up in the last stride to score by a nose for trainer Micky Hammond and jockey Callum Shepherd.
