Daniel Jones: Minnesota Vikings to sign former New York Giants quarterback following release

Daniel Jones is to sign with the Minnesota Vikings' practice squad after being benched and then released by the New York Giants.

Jones recently saw his time in New York come to an end when he was demoted to third string and replaced by Tommy DeVito as starter ahead of Week 12.

The Giants subsequently granted his wish to be released, with Jones becoming a free agent this week after clearing waivers on Monday.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Tom Pelissero and Cameron Wolfe reported Wednesday that Jones will now join up with Kevin O'Connell's Vikings.

Jones finished his Giants career 24-44-1 as a starter after arriving as the sixth overall pick in the 2019 Draft, leading the team to the playoffs just once in 2022.

He completed 317 of 472 passes for 3,205 yards and 15 touchdowns to five interceptions while rushing for 708 yards and seven touchdowns that year, earning him a new four-year, $160m contract extension.

But he 27-year-old never looked like living up to his bumper deal as a season-ending injury in 2023 combined with continued turnover issues behind a poor offensive line - somewhat the story of his Giants tenure - led the Giants to part ways with their former first-round pick.

Jones will now join a quarterback room led by Sam Darnold, whose career resurgence under O'Connell will be something the former Giants player will be seeking to mirror.

Minnesota have emerged as one of the surprise packages of the 2024 campaign with a 9-2 record that puts them in a strong position to reach the playoffs.
