Mike McCarthy: Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones not considering firing head coach

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones says he is not thinking about firing head coach Mike McCarthy in the wake of Sunday's devastating loss to the Detroit Lions.

The Cowboys were thumped 47-9 on Sunday night in what marked their fourth successive home defeat dating back to last season, leaving them third in the NFC East and 3-3 ahead of the bye week.

"I haven't even considered that," Jones said of potentially moving on from McCarthy. "I'm not considering that. Just so you're clear. I'm not considering that.

"I wouldn't be in a hypothetical in that matter - do you think I'm an idiot? Do you? OK, well I'm not going to hypothetical with you about when I'd consider a coaching change in light of the timing we're sitting here with. I'm not. At all."

Dallas suffered in the absence of star pass rusher Micah Parsons, with DeMarcus Lawrence and cornerback DaRon Blank also missing on the day as they surrendered 492 yards of total offense and five offensive touchdowns. Dak Prescott meanwhile threw two interceptions without a touchdown in their worst home defeat since Jones took over as owner in 1989.

"The thing that was impressive, I saw a very physical bunch that was having a lot of fun at our expense," Jones told reporters. "We won't forget it, not against Detroit. We saw how we would like to be.

McCarthy is currently in the final year of his contract following three straight 12-5 campaigns, having returned in September under heightened pressure in the wake of the team's crushing playoff exit to Matt LaFleur's surprise package Green Bay Packers last season.

Jones referred to Sunday's result as a 'shocker'.

"We've got to assess and we've certainly got a bye week, but there's nothing magic about a bye week," Jones added. "You can do some things differently within three days of some of the things that bit us out there today.

"This was very concerning and it was very humbling and it felt bad because of all of our great fans, especially the ones in the stadium and certainly the ones that are all about the Cowboys."
