Elfsborg coach Klas Ingesson dies of cancer aged 46

Elfsborg manager Klas Ingesson has died of cancer at the age of 46.

The former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder, who scored 13 goals in 57 appearances for Sweden, had been suffering from multiple myeloma since 2009.

Despite contracting the incurable illness, Ingesson continued to work and managed Elfsborg, leading them to the Swedish Cup final in 2014.

He did so aided by a walking frame to support his brittle bones and later a wheelchair, but he missed the 1-0 final victory over Helsingborgs after falling out of his chair when being pushed across the pitch at half-time during an earlier league match.

A statement issued by Elfsborg read: "It is a very sad statement to make that Klas Ingesson this morning (Wednesday) passed away.

"Our thoughts are foremost with his wife and children who were with him at the end."

During his playing days, Ingesson was a member of the talented Sweden team which finished third at the 1994 World Cup and he also featured at Italia 90.

Ingesson played for a number of clubs in Europe, including Gothenburg, Mechelen, Italian sides Bari and Bologna, as well as a brief spell in France with Marseille.

But it was during his two-year spell with Wednesday from 1994 to 1996 that he perhaps became known to British fans and the club paid tribute to him, tweeting a photo of him making one of his 21 appearances for them with an RIP message attached as well as releasing a statement on their official website.

“Sheffield Wednesday are saddened to learn of the passing of Klas Ingesson,” it read.

“The former Owls midfielder, just 46, has lost a long battle with illness.

“Our thoughts are with Klas’ family and friends at this very sad time.”
