Europa League 2024/25 format, fixtures, dates and knockout stage qualification as Man Utd, Tottenham, Rangers compete

The revamped Europa League is coming towards the conclusion of its league stage.

Manchester United, Tottenham and Rangers are competing in Europe's second-tier club competition this term and are vying to reach the knockout stage.

The biggest change relates to the competition's group stage, which has become a single 36-team 'league stage'. Each club will face eight different teams, with four home fixtures and four away. The top eight overall advance directly to the round of 16.

Teams that finish ninth to 24th will then compete in the knockout play-offs, with victors progressing to the last 16.

The knockout phase remains the same, with teams competing in a two-legged tie in the last 16, quarter-finals and semi-finals before the one-legged final in Bilbao on May 21.

Matchday 8: January 30

Manchester United currently occupy fourth place and a win against FCSB in their final game will guarantee them a top-eight finish to go straight into the round of 16.

If they stayed in fourth at the end of the league phase, they would face the winners of the play-off phase involving the teams placed 13th, 14th, 19th and 20th.

The teams currently in those positions going into the final round of the league stage are Rangers (13th), AZ Alkmaar (14th), FC Midtjylland (19th) and Elfsborg (20th).

Tottenham currently occupy sixth place and a win against Elfsborg in their final game will guarantee them a top-eight finish to go straight into the round of 16.

If Spurs were to remain in their current position, they would face the winners of the play-off match involving teams in 11th, 12th, 21st and 22nd.

The teams currently in those positions going into the final round of the league stage are Viktoria Plzen (11th), Olympiakos (12th), Roma (21st) and Ferencvaros (22nd).

Rangers are guaranteed the top-24 finish required to reach the knockout phase but look set to be heading into the play-off phase, with them currently three points behind eighth place and in 13th spot going into the final round of fixtures.

They would currently be seeded for the two-legged knockout phase play-off, providing they stay in the top 16 after next week. Rangers or AZ Alkmaar (14th) would currently face FC Midtjylland (19th) or Elfsborg (20th) in the play-off phase.

Round of 16: March 6 and March 13, 2025
Quarter-finals: April 10 and April 17, 2025

The 2024/25 Europa League campaign will conclude at the Estadio de San Mames in Bilbao, Spain, on May 21 2025.

A third season-long European club competition was introduced in 2021/22 in the form of the Conference League.

This year, Chelsea finished top of the revamped Conference League table with a flawless record. Shamrock Rovers won three of their six matches to reach the knockout play-offs but Hearts narrowly missed out.
